The Amoana Academy is a not-for-profit school operating in Rifle Range, West Honiara. The school caters for impoverished children with limited access to education due to high school fees and proximity to suitable schooling.
Notwithstanding the passion and dedication of the educators at Amoana, the school is overcrowded and lacks resources which hinders the teachers’ ability to provide a stimulating and effective learning environment for the students.
The school offers learning for children aged 5 to 13 years old. There is a growing demand for quality education in the area, and the Amoana Academy, having heard about MAMA’s work with other schools in the region, submitted a project proposal to expand and improve their school infrastructure.
MAMA’s response
In June 2024, MAMA approved funding for Amoana to refurbish their existing classroom buildings and improve the learning environment for the students. The project aims to assist Amoana to:
- Increase student capacity from 200 to 400, enabling more underprivileged children to access education.
- Enhance the learning environment by creating dedicated spaces for teaching, learning and extra-curricular activities.
- Improve school facilities and educational resources.
The project is also designed to promote gender equality, disability access and improve environmental sustainability.
This project is not just about bricks and mortar, it’s about creating a sustainable learning environment for underprivileged children. By providing quality education and nurturing their potential, we empower children to break the cycle of poverty and contribute positively to society. We believe the project aligns perfectly with MAMA’s mission of supporting impactful and sustainable initiatives.
