In 2012, MAMA partnered with the Alola Foundation in Timor-Leste to fund a new mobile library to help improve access to books, particularly for children in remote areas. The Mobile Library was designed as a transportable facility that would travel to marginalised communities and provide educational programs for pre-primary and primary aged children.

Now 13 years on, and the MAMA funded mobile libraries have helped empower over 67,000 children in Timor-Leste through improved access to educational resources and literacy and numeracy programs. It’s a remarkable program and a credit to everyone involved at the Alola Foundation for their commitment, resourcefulness and dedication to promoting the joy of reading.

The successful program was recently featured in a news report by Timor-Leste broadcaster, RTTL World News.

We love hearing updates from our partners, and particularly enjoy hearing directly from some of the many children we are empowering through improved access to education.

“I live in Beduku and study in Beduku. I love reading books from this library.” – Peregrino, 9 years old.

“I’m happy because today I did an activity that I can learn to read so I’m very happy to participate in this session.” – Octavia.

Congratulations to the team at Alola for all that you continue to do, and the success you are having in promoting the joy of reading to so many children in Timor-Leste.
