Last month, students from Marist College Canberra and Canberra Girls Grammar School travelled to the Solomon Islands for an unforgettable immersion experience, and visited two of Make A Mark Australia’s partner schools: Mercy School in Burns Creek and Amoana Christian Academy on the outskirts of Honiara.

This was no ordinary school visit. Over several days, the students not only witnessed the energy and ambition of the local classrooms, but also formed deep and genuine connections with the students and teachers they met – connections that will last a lifetime.

For many, it was a transformative encounter with resilience, joy, and shared humanity.

“My time at Mercy School in Burns Creek has really stayed with me,” said Elijah Roff (Year 11, Marist). “The students had this incredible joy and curiosity that made every moment feel meaningful… I’ll always carry that sense of connection and hope with me.”

The impact of the visit stretched far beyond the classroom. Olivia Pirie, a Telopea High School student travelling with the group, reflected on the start inequality she witnessed:

“It was difficult to face the fact that… the kids at Mercy School were destined for a far harder life despite being the same as the kids I coach at Eastlakes FC Auskick… I find it impossible to see this and not feel the need to do something with my own privilege.”

Over at Amoana Christian Academy, students from CGGS were similarly moved by the warmth and generosity of their hosts.

“One of my biggest wow moments,” shared Isobel Eley, “was realising how full life can be without the things we often consider ‘essential’ back home – Wi-Fi, going to school each day, etc. In the Solomons, I saw people who had less in material terms, but much more in joy, community and connection.”

For Prisha Mahapatra, it was the spirit of giving that struck the deepest chord:

“It was incredibly moving to see how much joy they took in giving and connecting with us, even when many had so little…”

The students immersed themselves in classroom life, games of soccer and volleyball, shared stories, and even had the chance to lead a few lessons.

For Marist student Kane Villanueva, those joyful, playful moments became treasured memories:

“Mercy School welcomed us with countless faces of joy… Visiting left us feeling incredibly grateful.”

The experience reinforced a truth that sits at the heart of Make A Mark Australia’s mission – that the most powerful change happens through presence, partnership and connection.

As Shanaya Monga (CGGS) summed up beautifully:

“Everyone’s kindness and compassion in the Solomons really changed my perspective on how I interact with others.”

Thank you to Marist College Canberra and Canberra Girs Gammar School, to the communities who welcomed the students so generously, and to the next generation of changemakers from Marist and CGGS. Your journey to the Solomons has left a mark – on hearts, minds, and futures.
